October 11, 2020 (Sunday)

Hard to believe that I don’t have a trial this weekend. It has been since July 18 since I had a weekend off… but boy do I love to trial!! On that weekend… a teacher from school and her boyfriend came out and help me paint the barn. It was then that we discovered how bad the roof was (needing the porch area replaced on both the front and the back). When I built the barn I was unaware of how the lack of a high pitch impacts the materials you use to roof the roof. Oh well… I’ll know in my next life!! HaHa!!

Last night, a friend of mine from St. Michael came out to my house… we had a bottle of wine, a bonfire, and good conversation. It was nice. I worked on the outside a little before she came so it looked presentable as well as the inside – to the bathroom – if she needed to use it. I hadn’t cleaned in a very long time!! I love it when my house is clean and so I got up – made a list of how I would clean the house throughout the week… and then got started.

Today – Sunday – was the Den. Now I had been working in the den for the last several days as I had to get my 2019 taxes in (had filed for an extension and it was coming up soon for payment – October 15, 2020). UGH! Got them in to the accountant on Thursday and so Friday and Saturday I organized my stack of bills and balanced my checkbook (last time July, 30, 2020). Felt ever so good to become current on my checkbook… I have all my bills automatically paid so I am seldom delinquent in my bills and I know how much is in the checkbook – generally. It’s nice to be up to date. I want to file my 2020 taxes on time so that when I retire in June, 2021 – all is done!

Soooo… I filed all my bills downstairs in the file folders, moved the 2019 tax file to the basement, dusted the bookcases and vacuumed the carpet. I even washed a section of it (where Kaiden had gone and rolled around after coming out of the pond making it look dirty). Followed up with washing my clothes and putting them away. Then it was time for my pups!!

We go “to the hill” nearly every day. It’s beyond the pond and looks over the other acres. I can see the horses two houses down and the neighbors back fields. It’s quiet… it’s pretty. The dogs can be let off lead… well really only Jake is on lead and I take it off when we are at the hill. He took off and ran down the fence to chase the neighbor’s dogs – up close and personal like. Ever since that happened – I am more vigilant. He and Lukas though love to run and smell the field. They sometimes head to the back of the field… and that’s just fine. It wonderful watching them enjoy the outside. Does my soul well! Kaiden chases his ball! He lives to do that… I can chuck that ball a good distance and he chases it like a “bat out of hell!” He brings it back and we do it again… and again… and again! Sometimes – Jake will bomb dive him! He uses all his weight and throws himself towards Kaiden. Kaiden just dodges him… and keeps running! Lukas loves to play too… he can’t outrun Kaiden so I will hold Kaiden and throw it so Lukas can see it and catch it on a bounce or two. I let Kaiden go then… Lukas brings it back and I tell him – “It’s Kaiden’s turn now!” This goes on for some 20-30 minutes. We then walk back to the house… now without Jake on lead. They stop and walk the banks of the pond and then into the yard.

We did this twice today… This trip to the hill started when Covid hit… and we were at home. This is one of the good things that came from the Covid 19 virus – a good “tradition” now!

The second time… we ended up going in the pond! Kaiden loves swimming for his water ball! Lukas loves barking at him trying to get it (he won’t go in the water… but will go in up to his chest).

Lukas will try to block Kaiden from getting out of the water until Kaiden drops the ball. Jake just runs back and forth. They love doing this! I love watching them do it. It’s so simple… and yet so fulfilling… so peaceful… and complete

I also got to set up a several obstacles in the yard to work with Kaiden. I am trying to teach him to collect and not jump so big. I am trying to teach him lateral sends. He is so darn smart. I just need to move faster & smarter!!

Today was a good day overall… got what I wanted to get done. Got to play with my pups… and now – just chilling!! Will get the dogs their dinner… and actually – I think I will go to bed early.

Thank you Lord for such a GREAT weekend! Thank you Lord for my pups!

Lukas has a Seizure (…after almost a year)

Yesterday, July 16, 2019, after cutting some grass – I came into the porch area to put my grass blower and weed wacker away. It was about 7:27p. A storm was coming in… literally and figuratively. Walked up the little ramp that I had built for Shadow and Lukas was looking at me at the top of the ramp… his head was cocked and he was holding his left leg out (as to “give me 5”). I thought this might be the beginning of a seizure… so I tried to get him into the house/on the balcony… but he wouldn’t move – so we just sat down. I held him.

He shook/trembled some… he seemed awake and aware – but his muscles seemed “locked.” I looked at the time and it was 7:32p. His shaking stopped some 2 mins (actually about 1.5 minutes) but we stayed down until 7:35p. He eventually got up and moved as if nothing had happened.

In the house – I noticed that he had thrown up in the living room (I thought he had been eating “poop” while I was cutting the grass)… it was dark and liquidy. After he entered the house from the seizure he went to the dog dish and drank. He drank – not a ton of water though. He threw up two additional times in the next hour. Always the vomit was dark and watery. I chose not to feed him his dinner as I wanted his stomach to settled.

I thought to myself… is there anything that is “different” that would have brought this on? The only thing I thought of… I had placed a Glade “Plug In” in the dining room. It was giving off a pretty strong smell. Could this have triggered it? I don’t know but I took it down so not to have it going. In addition, I have decided to start the herb that he was on from Dr. Carlson. I have an appointment in a few weeks… and will ask him about it.

Oh Lukey…

Lukas’ Progression on Atypical Cushings

Lukas was diagnosed with Atypical Cushings in late March, 2018, when his adrenal test – which was sent to the University of Tennessee – came back positive.  His symptoms started in November… went to the vet for his heavy panting while running in the weave poles (something that had never happened before); in January… for his excessive drinking of water; in March for his loss of hair on both sides of his shoulders.

I started him on melatonin initially – no lignans (as I didn’t realize I needed to start both).  Got a call from the vet regarding where I was getting my lignans (for another client)…  told them I hadn’t started that yet.  Read again – found out I should have been.  Thank God for the call – my guardian angel strikes again!!  On April 6, 2018 – he started on both Melatonin and Lignans (plus supplements… vitamins, omega 3, etc.).

We were on everything for two months before “Nationals” in June.  His drinking had lesson some.  His hair was thin…  but regrowing.  His skin is still thin.  His panting had not improved at all and his muscle mass… seemed a lot.

At Nationals – although it may have been due to heat – he was slow and lethargic through most the trail.  We did not q on a standard due to time faults.   This had never happened before.  Was it his Cushings or was it the heat?

Made an appointment at the vet for Tueday, June 12, 2018.  Shared the information.  Although the melatonin and lignans seemed to be making a dent… he still wasn’t “right.”  We decided to add Lysodren – 250 mg – every three or four days.  I went with every four days.  His first dose he received on June 13, 2018.  His second on June 17th.  His panting was still extreme.  Panted all night… all the time.  His third dose came on June 21.  I began to see changes.  His panting slowed and all but disappeared (panting at “appropriate” times).  At the trial June 23-24, he ran much better – more with energy.   Not like his old self… but with more energy (maybe it was me who was also running with energy).  He got home from the trial and actually started playing with Kaiden.  He hadn’t done that in a while.  He wanted to “wrestle” with me.  His look is different… more attentive.  Maybe the old Lukie was returning!!  I could only hope and pray!

Two people asked me – as I was stating my concern at the trial on June 23-24, 2018 – have you ever thought of retiring him or taking some time off.  I talked of his C-ATCH runs… I talked about how he loves running with me.

I wasn’t completely truthful.  Bottom line… it is me who loves running for the C-ATCH record and most important – it is that I love running with him.  I love knowing he almost can read my mind when we are on the course together.  I loves that connection!  It seems ever so selfish…  but I love being with him.

I will continue to monitor his progress.  Hopefully we are on the right track!!  Lukie I love ya…

Update:  Gave the fourth (4th) dose the evening (7:30p) of June 25, 2018.  His panting seemed to have reoccurred… at least for the moment.  He has slowed now (9:00p).

Little Lukas had a Seizure

My little Lukas had a seizure after over a year without… or at least I think a year without.  I now am wonder if he has been having them and I am not aware.

He had dinner at around 6:30p.m.  Everything was normal.  Went outside around 8:45p.m. to repair a board on the barn and I saw him holding up his paw like he was stiff. Got out there right away… he looked at me as if he was confused.  Kaiden reacted with sniffing and whining around him.  Kaiden has a good heart for noticing when his dogs are “in trouble.”

In any case, I put my arms around Lukas and laid him down.  He was stiff and shaking.  He seemed to be struggling some with a unawareness of what was happening.  I ended up bringing him into my lap and holding him close.  It may have been my imagination but this seemed to help a little.  I thought the seizure was stronger and lasted longer than in the past.  I began to sing to him…  “Hush little baby…”  Believe it or not… I do truly think he calmed even more.  Sung for about two minutes until the seizure was over.

His recovery…  he laid in my lap for some 5 minutes.  When he eventually wanted to get up his back legs were widely spread to balance his body.  His stands was wider than normal.  He seemed to be a bit unsteady on his feet – not a lot but a bit.  We went to the bedroom and onto the bed so that he could lay comfortably.  He recovered.

Jake started to bark at the neighbor’s dogs… and Lukas wanted to get down.  He seemed a bit unstable on the stairs that lead to the bed but went out the bedroom door, down another set of steps and to the fenced area.  He did went to the bathroom (urinated).

It has been over a year.  This was stronger and seemed a little longer (a little over 2 minutes).  I will increase the herb back up to two scoops (from the one he has been on for a little while).  I will watch him the rest of the night…

I will also ask Jen Ortman (appointment on August 23) if he knew he was having a seizure as well as did Kaiden know what was happening.  I am wondering if Kaiden can let me know somethings happening…  I’ll ask her.

Rest little Lukas… rest.

Sir Lukas and Atypical Cushings – Some Thoughts on Living With It

It’s pretty amazing what your mind can do…  ever since Lukas was diagnosed with Atypical Cushings, my mind has played with me.  I worry… I worry a lot about him.  I am not sure I have been doing the right thing for him…  am I doing enough?  Are his meds working?  How can I help or can I help return his muscle mass to his body?  What else can I do?  Too much… too much… too much!!  At what expense…  the loss of enjoyment and happiness – and a loss of the time we have together (which may be years!!).

If You Are Very Blessed...
My agility friend posted this… and I immediately thought of my pups!! They so have enriched my life – and I hope theirs! Each pup brings a gift with them… thank you pups!

I need – I must – enjoy his presence in my life each and every day!  I need to enjoy the funny things he does!  I need to enjoy how he plays with Kaiden and to some extent – Jake.  How he carries his guggy (his toy) around with him.  How he takes Kaiden outside so Kaiden doesn’t have an “accident” in the house.  How he barks at me right before we run!  How he looks at me – after we complete a run as if to say, “We did good mom – didn’t we?!”  How he will lay close to me… keeping an eye on me.

This is my Lukie…  and how blessed I am!  How I need to recognize this… always keeping these things in the forefront of my mind!

HOW VERY TRUE!!

Happy 12th Birthday Baby Jake

Baby Jake - Puppy
Baby Jake as a Puppy!

Happy 12th Birthday Baby Jake!! Baby Jake was my very first Agility Dog – running his first trial in May, 2009. Believe it or not – he was quick at home in the back yard… at trials or during training – not so much. In the beginning of our agility career… I was anxious – which made him anxious! He retired 17 months later… in December, 2010. He kept telling me all those months that he didn’t want to run… his last run it was clear. He did the first and last jump – ran beside everything else and refused to do the obstacles. I got it. From that point forward, he stayed at home and guarded his two “sisters” and the house when I was away running Sir Lukas. He seemed satisfied. In October, 2017 – both girls had crossed the Rainbow Bridge and he was alone at home. My neighbors said he would howl mournfully the whole time we were gone… and eventually started to jump the fence. I told him he would not be alone again and would be coming to trials with us.

Baby Jake jumping a triple!

Eventually he would run one or two runs. He is much harder to run than Lukas… folks say he looks happy though (as I worried about that…)! Baby Jake is the type of dog that does not need to be close to you physically… but he always watches; he always knows what is going on. He’s a good dog! He will always be remembered as the pup that started it all for me in the agility ring! Thank you Baby Jake!! Happy Birthday! May you have many more!! Love you boy!!

Today – A New Beginning for Lukas

Today, April 6, 2018, we officially have all theLukas - cropped “meds” and/or “supplements” for my little boy Sir Lukas.   Today we start the regiment completely…  this is what he is now taking to boost his system and address his UDS, his seizures and Atypical Cushings (in my previous post – I think I didn’t include that he has had seizures too – which has abated after we started him on a Chinese herb):

  • Azathioprine (35 mg):  1 capsule every 3rd day (for his UDS)
  • Tian Ma Plus II:  1 little scoop BID/reduced last week from 2 scoops BID (for his seizures – reduced from 7 seizures in 6 months [January – June, 2017] to now 0 since July, 2017!)
  • NuJoint DS:  2 tabs per day (1000 mg Glucosamine, 500 mg Chondroitin Sulfate, 500 mg MSM, 100mg Vitamin C)
  • Benadryl:  50 mg per day (for his allergies… had a great deal of inflammation last year that didn’t stop – which I believe ended up encouraging the mast cell tumor growth which we had removed in March, 2017)

Added since his Atypical Cushings diagnoses:

  • Melatonin:  6mg BID (for Atypical Cushings) – added approximately 3/25/18
  • HMR Lignan:  40 mg cap – 1 per day (for Atypical Cushings) – added 4/5/2018
  • Standard Process Canine Whole Body Support:  1/2 teaspoon BID – added 3/27/18
  • Kan Essential Four Marvels Tab:  2 tabs BID – added 3/29/18
  • VRS Omega Benefit for Canine (Omega 3)

As I prepare this all each meal… it seems like a lot!  I only hope and pray that it will be good for his body as he grows in his 10th year of life (his birthday is April 24th).  We have lots to do still…  he has much to teach Courageous Kaiden!  He has much to teach me!

Take care my little Lukie!!  Let’s make it happen!!

Welcome Courageous Kaiden!!

Courageous Kaiden entered into the Armbrust Clan… he truly was a companion.

Morgan Sit (002)
Kaiden at 6 Weeks Old

On July 3, 2017, Lukas and I met the newest member of our family!  Courageous Kaiden entered into the Armbrust Clan!  His name was initially “Morgan.”  I went back and forth with his name being Kaiden or Kairo.  Kaiden meant companion… Kairo meant victorious.  I ended going with Kaiden as he truly was a companion…

His eyes were sky blue…  and he seemed very sweet.  Lukas and Kaiden hit it off right away.  On his way home… he did get sick in the car.  When he spoke to the animal communicator (Jen Ortman) – he told her that he got sick.  He did!

I have entered on previous pages information from the web site regarding his mom and dad.  Both parents are relatively small… weighing 27 lbs and 35 lbs.  Kaiden was born on May 5, 2017 and came to me at 8 weeks.  Lukas and I picked him up in Princeton, Illinois after a dog trial in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He was born in Arkansas but Angela brought him up to Illinois to get him a little closer.  I was able to meet his mother and father… with his mother snapping at me when I went to pick him up (initially she was comfortable with me… and then I reached down to pick him up/which I shouldn’t have).

Camped overnight on July 3, 3017 outside of Indianapolis, Indiana.  Wanted to have Kaiden meet Jake and Misty in the morning oppose to having him come and then be concerned for the evening.  Lots of fireworks that night…  both Lukas and Kaiden slept through them all!!  So no issue with noise – at this time!!

Got home… and first met Jake.  Since it was just me, I put everyone in the house.  Then had Kaiden outside the fence and let Jake out…  Jake smelled him through the fence and then after some time – I brought him inside the fence.  No issue!!  Did the same with Misty… and of course, there was not an issue with her.  Then I brought Jake and Misty out together… and then Lukas.  All good!!!

Lukas and Kaiden are together quite a bit.  Lukas sometimes gets frustrated with hisKaiden and Lukas (7-6-17)-4 biting of the legs… but overall – Lukas is wonderful with him.  Jake isn’t very interested… and sometimes goes after him.  Some is legit… some are not.  Kaiden never goes after Jake like Micah did.  He seems to respects Jake but just wants to play.

Kaiden is pretty smart and catches on pretty quick.

Let me share with you what has happened since Kaiden has come into our family…  As of  today, April, 2018 he is taking two classes.  One class on Sunday at Dogwood Agility – a foundations class; and now an intermediate class at ARF.  He is very quick… fast.  I am having to learn how to run all over again as he is completely different than Lukas.

Kaiden LOVES to run… run the tunnels, run the A-Frame, just loves to run!  My instructor at Dogwood said something to me that clicked.   She said – at this point in his life – I need to be his brain because right now as he runs – his brain is exploding with excitement when he runs.  I read this as I need to center him… guide him…  help him make the right decisions as we are running.  I knew this before – but must have forgotten it.  I will do this… I will help him until we become a true team – in a few years.

Now that Kaiden is older – 11 months today – he is bigger and loves to rough house with Jake – and now – Jake with him.  They wrestle a lot…  Lukas tries to intervene some.  He told the animal communicator that he is concerned that Jake might break Kaiden.  I told Lukas not to worry…  Kaiden moves faster than Jake and when it gets extremely physical – Kaiden will take off running and tries to run circles around Jake as if to say… “Catch me if you can.”  It is very fun to watch…  He is full of life!.

Kaiden is going to be fun to run… different than Lukas and just as fun!!

Kaiden (November 12, 2017)-6mths
Courageous Kaiden at six month

Folks say to me – “Get use to not Q-ing as often as you do with Lukas.”  I think they forget how Lukas and I were in the early days… the days before becoming a “team.”  I think Kaiden and I will get there faster because I know more…

I have recently weighed him… he’s now 38 pounds (larger than both his mother and father) and measures still at 16″ (as of last week).  I know he has six more months before he officially gets measured… hoping he can stay at 16″.

He goes to every trial that Lukas goes to…  the agility folks have helped tremendously with his socialization.  I am blessed for my friends in agility!  They helped Micah… and have helped Kaiden!  Kaiden still has his moments… mostly when he has been in the crate too long.  I need to do a better job of getting him out and walking him when at trials.  Initially he was able to ride in a car without any problem. Then he went through a period of time where he would get car sick.  He’s over that now…  another milestone passed!

I am looking forward to see the path we end up on…  he’s healthy; he’s fun; he’s smart – leaning things fast and has spunk!  Hope I can do right by him!

Lukas Isn’t Feeling Well

Lukas hasn’t been feeling well now for about four months… took him in November 6, 2017 since he had been panting heavily while in the weave poles.  Dr. examined him and couldn’t find any issue with his lungs but prescribed enrofloxacin (Baytril) in case he had an infection.  It didn’t seem to make a difference…

I took him in again in January 17, 2018 because he was drinking a great deal of water now for some time.  The vet had me bring in a urine specimen.  Nothing really there.  He suggested that I take a day and collect urine throughout the day.  He would only charge me for one urinalysis even though there were going to be multiple.  The problem would be to be home an entire day to do that…  even now – March 14, 2018 – there hasn’t been a day that I was home all day.  UGH!

He also in trials and in playing with Kaiden seems to run out of energy/steam in the middle of the fun.  He was running slower at trials.  Is it his age?  or something else?  What is wrong with my little baby???

Then most recently – I noticed he is losing his hair on both sides of his shoulders.  You can see his skin.  I contacted MedVet to schedule an appointment with his skin doctor – Dr. Gordan.  Then Sunday, I thought to take him back to Cheshire and get the doctor’s opinion after speaking with Dr. Gordon.

After reading… I thought his symptoms could be either a Thyroid problem or Cushings – an adrenal problem.

What Is Cushing’s Disease in Dogs?

The endocrine system is the collective system of glands that produce and secrete hormones in the body, one of which is the hormone cortisol. At normal levels, cortisol performs many useful functions including helping individuals respond to stress and modulating the immune system, but too much cortisol in the body can do a lot of damage.  The condition associated with an excess of cortisol is medically referred to as hyperadrenocorticism or Cushing’s disease, and it is one of the most common endocrine disorders that affects dogs.  Cushing’s disease can develop when a dog’s own body overproduces cortisol or when a dog is given corticosteroid medications (prednisone, dexamethasone, triamcinolone, etc.) at high doses and/or over a long period of time. Hyperadrenocorticism generally affects middle-aged to older animals

Made an appointment with Dr. Ballard at Cheshire on March 13, 2018.  They could fit me in.  He believes that it is Cushings.  He suggested doing a test (costing over $400) through the University of Tennessee.  It would give us more conclusive results.  I agreed.  He said it would take up to 10 days.  I dropped Lukas off the next day at Cheshire for the blood test.  He would have to fast (when I picked him up at the end of the day Wednesday I was a little upset.  I had left food for him to eat since he had to fast.  They did not give him the food.  He also was hoarse.  I suspect he had been barking a great deal of the day.).

We got the results back on March 23, 2018 (getting a copy on March 24, 2018)…  they are below.  It showed that he may have what they call “Atypical Cushings” – to where the sex hormones are increased.  The Cortisol is increased “post ACTH” a tad… but the Androstenedione is increase both baseline and post ACTH.  Post ACTH – the progesterone and 17 OH Progesterone are elevated.  Dr. Ballard over the phone suggested I start on Melatonin (6mg) and Legnin (10-40mg) as suggested in the report below.  Started him immediately on the Melatonin as it was readily available… the Legnins I didn’t find until Sunday (April 2, 2018).

Lukas Cushing Results (Page 2)

Went to Dr. Gordon – Lukas’ “skin doctor” to get his opinion (See report below).

Well… I also went to Dr. Carlson (and sent him the information above).  He is my holistic veterinarian (and a parent from St. Michael days).  I wanted something that might be able to “beef up” his condition and his health.  I was given the following to begin administration starting on March 28, 2018.  He stated also that the Meletonin won’t do anything negative…

  • Standard Process Canine Whole Body Support (100g)
  • Omega Benefits, Canine, Caps 120 count
  • Kan Essentials – Four Marvels
  • Reduce the Tian Ma Plus to one scoop 2x a day (oppose to two scoops) for his seizures

On April 3, 2018 – while at class with Kaiden – either Jake or Lukas got the bottle and ate/or disposed of over 100 capsules.  I found out it was Lukas as he vomited fishy fluid three different times that evening (I thought it was Jake… WRONG!!  If it was – he didn’t get sick).  Contacted the vet and the technicians at the company – nothing bad outside of vomiting and potentially diarrhea.  Ordered additional bottles…  have enough to get him through the week (placed a week’s worth in the med case).

I also did a change of his food…  went initially with “Honest Kitchen” as Dr. Spracklin said it was good for Micah.  After investigating – it has 40% carbs.  I read that carbs are not good and lower carbs are better.  I am still using a 1/2 cup split between all three dogs… but mostly for Lukas to be able to mix his meds in.  I ground them up and place them in the mixture and use it as a topper.  Then… for his regular food I am changing over (both Kaiden and Lukas) to Merrick’s Grain Free Real Texas Beef and Sweet Potato.  The protein level is 38% and 32% carbs.  (or 33%).  Will see how it goes…  more protein for his muscle loss.Merrick Grain Free Dry Dog Food - Texas Beef

On Tuesday, April 4, 2018, I went back to Cheshire to review Dr. Gordon’s report.  Dr. Gordon suggested/diagnosed four things:  (1) Atypical Adrenal Disease; (2) UDS; (3) Muscle atrophy; and (4) Early laryngeal paralysis.  See info below.  Dr. Ballard did not think testing for Thyroid would be a good use of my money.  He also talked about the laryngeal paralysis.  He also did not see this as an issue.  In regard to the muscle atrophy…  if we got the Cushings under control – the muscle would improve.  I asked him about the diet comment – he said that Dr. Gordon is a skin doctor and this is something they key into all the time.  He did not think food was causing this… nor that a food change was necessary.

Lukas (From MedVet) - Dr. Gordon (March, 2018)

So here we are…  the lignan’s came today in the mail so he will start the lignans this evening.  I am more aware of Lukas’ back legs slipping.  I believe I will drop out of agility class with him – we’ll see.

Please dear God… help my little boy!

Kaiden’s Dad – Turkey Run Han Solo of MtnMist (“Hans”)

Turkey Run Han Solo of Mountain Mist - Hans (Kaiden's Dad)For some time, we have been on the lookout for a good male to bring to our farm as an outcross, but it was a difficult step to take because we also wanted to stay with the old bloodlines that have served us so well. Certik-Bertik kept catching our eye because he kept those Hangin’ Tree bloodlines close to the forefront, and he is just one incredible dog.   (I mean how can you not love saying “He is the most titled Aussie in the world?”)  Certik really exemplified everything we loved about the old working lines from his keen stock sense to his stick-to-it work ethic to his devotion for his family. When a male pup was available from him, we had to jump at the chance and so Hans joined our family.

Han (Kaiden's Father)Hans has fully met the expectations we had of a Certik son. He joined our household at the same time that Rose Marie was getting a knee replacement (that turned into a painful three surgery affair lasting most of a year).  While there is no doubt that Hans is an active fellow preferring to rough-house with Ren and bounce through life, he dutifully slowed his step beside Rose Marie recognizing that she wasn’t so spritely as he. He paused at each step and gave her the “Are you sure you can make it?” look when they headed upstairs together. And as he has grown, his brains and focus have really shone through.  He loves games from fetching frisbees to “can you walk this tree log?” to “find your toy.” (His only disadvantage on this score is our habit of directly comparing him to Ren’s uncanny intelligence combined with Ren’s extra two years of life experience.  Truly Hans is a remarkably sharp dog in his own right.)

After Rose Marie’s knee replacement, the older more experienced dogs seemed a safer bet when working the cows until she could hobble a little faster if things went south so Hans hasn’t gotten any time in with the larger stock. However, he has helped with the sheep and goats during feeding time or when someone (ahem.. Angela) forgot to latch the gate. He works with a lot of eye and intensity compared to most Aussies — an intensity that is probably most similar to Char among dogs that we have previously worked.  Hans is a very silent worker and only barks or bites with purpose.  While this degree of presence and self-confidence often develops with time and experience, it is really impressive for a dog with limited time on stock.

Note:  Hans moved to Iowa with Angela late 2015 to get more diverse experiences, and (hopefully) see if they can enter some competitions together.  He has adjusted to being a housedog remarkably well (although he was less than impressed to go from a 50 – 70 degree Arkansas winter to  a 0 – 15 degree Iowa winter.)  Angela is hopeful that they can learn enough to get their feet wet in a few more trials this year.  We will keep you posted on the progress.
